Geographic Focus and Deal Experience

Regional Focus: The Southeast and The Gulf States, North and South Carolina
Memberships:  Atlanta Venture Forum, Nashville Healthcare Leadership Council, National Association of Venture Capital, Southeast Medical Device Association, and Birmingham Venture Club.

Gulf States: Even prior to Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita, Cedar had been active in Louisiana, Texas, Alabama and the Gulf Coast. Our focus on medical devices and health care services has resulted in the expansion of our geographic presence throughout the Southeast, including in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina; Florida; and in Nashville, Tennessee.  Recent activities in these regions have included:
  • Reviewed medical device, medical technology in North and South Carolina, and health care service companies in Florida and Tennessee.
  • Performed feasibility study for a Louisiana surgery center in the context of a merger.
  • Advised a Louisiana-based surgery center on financial options and sourced a merger partner.
  • Advised an Alabama-based TPA and assisted with business development.
  • Advised a data storage company in Alabama, obtaining two term sheets for financing the company and introducing it to a potential strategic partner.
  • Sourced a buyer of their Medicare book of business for a Houston-based HMO.
  • Advised Ochsner HMO in assessing financial strategies.
  • Advised the seller of an Alabama HMO with revenues of $100 million that was a turnaround.  Sourced the buyer and the HMO is now part of HealthSpring, a publicly traded company.

South Carolina Flag

South Carolina: - Cedar is actively seeking business in South Carolina and interested in helping early stage companies in that region. The principals of Cedar have family ties to South Carolina and Ken Fox is based in South Carolina. Cedar has also participated in meetings with the Charleston Angel partners.  Our activities to date in South Carolina are listed below:

  • Participant in Innoventure, April 2005 - 2009, sponsored by the South Carolina Department of Commerce.
  • Introduced a Data Storage client to Unitrends, a data storage company based in Columbia, South Carolina, as a potential strategic partner.
  • Sourced potential lenders for a benefit administration company in 2004.
